The summer before junior year, I worked at the Palm Beach Gardens Library as a Children's Section Volunteer. While working at a library, you meet people from all walks of life, and engage in situations you may normally not have the chance to. For someone like me, who struggles to engage with strangers, it provided many chances to fine tune my social skills. However, what I enjoyed most was being able to help children discover a passion for reading. My work was split between stocking books and helping with children's programs. The library uses children's programs to introduce young children to the world of books - as an avid reader myself, it was exciting to be able to participate! I also volunteer with my church's worship group. Every Sunday, I sing with the group at 5 o'clock mass. Not only has this brought many new friends and mentors into my life, but it's strengthened my bond with God. I feel that volunteering is important because it encourages you to interact with your surrounding community, and it helps to create a better tomorrow.
